Show Some Respect Free Essays
Show Some Respect Michel de Montaigne once said, ââ¬Å"There is, nevertheless, a certain respect and a general duty of humanity that ties us, not only to beasts that have life and sense, but even to trees and plantsâ⬠(Foglia). Respect is the catalyst in the formation of a stepping stone on the path through the forest of life, creating bonds with all living creatures along the way. It is through respect that the other six of the seven teachings are formed. We will write a custom essay sample on Show Some Respect or any similar topic only for you Order Now Instilled in the youth of my time, or at least in my family, is to always be respectful towards all elders. This is something that todayââ¬â¢s youth has let fade into the past. It is heart wrenching to see elders being bad mouthed, ignored, and treated so cruelly. I was always taught to listen to what my elders were offering me in advice, even if I didnââ¬â¢t want it. I never once dared to talk back. If you respect your elders, take the time to listen. Youââ¬â¢ll be truly inspired as you hear their stories of long ago. Elders hold so much wisdom of the past, we can learn from them on how to better our future as people and caretakers of mother earth. Croaker 2 That being said, respect can also be defined in how we treat Mother Earth. Taking the time to recycle is one way of showing respect to her. Itââ¬â¢s really sad to see all the garbage being buried beneath her surface. Mother Earth is not a dumping ground, sheââ¬â¢s a birthing ground. Every spring she gives birth to new life to shed more beauty upon us. From the first flower breaking the surface to the greening of the trees. She welcomes in not only the human births, but the births of animals as well. That alone deserves the utmost respect, so letââ¬â¢s do our part and keep her clean. ââ¬Å"Respect yourself and take good care of yourselfâ⬠(Using the Seven Traditional Teachings to Raise Healthy Anishinaabe Children 18). This is the first step in defining what respect is. How do you treat yourself? Do you ask for help when you need it or do you proceed alone? Questions purposely left unanswered because itââ¬â¢s too hard to face the fact that they lost respect for themselves. People are constantly disrespecting their bodies by abusing drugs and alcohol. Maybe thatââ¬â¢s why most wonââ¬â¢t look in the mirror. They are too afraid they wonââ¬â¢t like what they see because they lost all respect for their spirit to thrive. Because of this I see the pain emanating from the eyes of our precious elders as they watch our youth commit cultural genocide. Mashkode-bizhiki, translated into English from the Ojibwe language means buffalo. I do not know exactly why our people chose this animal to represent respect in the seven teachings. However, I believe their paths have been intertwined with the Anishinaabe people because together they endured the tests of time. They had to go survive harsh winter conditions without the luxury of electricity to keep them warm at night. They were also slaughtered senselessly by Croaker 3 the white man as they took their lands from them. Here we are today, still standing strong but fewer in numbers just like the mashkode-bizhiki. If the path through the forest of life was marked with stones that represented each one of our sacred seven teachings, the stone of respect would begin the path. The next teachings would then follow. Because, respect forms all other teachings that assists in the formation of bonds with all living creatures as well. It Is Through Conflict That We Grow free essay sample
It is through conflict that we growâ⬠Most people donââ¬â¢t like conflict, majority find it stressful and destructive so it is usually avoided. But dispute is inevitable, without it we wouldnââ¬â¢t hear new ideas and work to create new solutions. Oskar Schindler, John Proctor and Hugh Thompson were people who were able to positively grow from events that involved conflict. The Salem witch trials of 1692, involved a series of prosecutions with people being accused of witch craft in colonial Massachusetts. Many innocent lives were lost due to the suspicion and lies of their fellow residents. For many it way easier to lie and put a ââ¬Ëfriendââ¬â¢ under suspicion, then to argue their own innocence. John Proctor was a man who had been suspected of committing adultery with Abigail Williams, but denied all allegations ââ¬Å"I will cut off my hand before I ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of your mind. We will write a custom essay sample on It Is Through Conflict That We Grow or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page We never touchedâ⬠. That was until the judge asks Proctor to recite the 10 commandments, Proctor admits to his affair with Abigail in order to expose the liar that Abigail is and protect the innocence of his wife Elizabeth. Proctor continued to show growth when Elizabeth asks John to ââ¬Ësave himselfââ¬â¢ by going against his morals and ââ¬Å"confessingâ⬠to having dealings with the devil. But instead John decides to revoke his confession because he would rather be hung then see his name on the church door and be falsely made an example of. The My Lai massacre occurred during the Vietnam war in 1968, and saw the murder of between 347 and 504 innocent, unarmed Vietnamese civilians by U. S Forces, most were women and children. Originally 26 U. S soldiers were charged for their actions but only one platoon leader Charlie Company was convicted. Charlie was given a life sentence, but only served three and a half years under house arrest. Hugh Thompson was a helicopter pilot from an aero-scout team, was flying above and saw many death and wounded civilians, he witnessed an unarmed women being kicked and shot at point blank range. Shocked and confused Hugh spoke to two lieutenants who claimed to be ââ¬Å"just following ordersâ⬠. Hugh took off in his helicopter and saw a group in a bunker being approached by ground personnel. Hugh then made the effort to land and had his crew protect him and the people, he told them if soldiers shot at these people then they should open fire upon them. He split the people into two groups and was able to fly them to safety. Hugh Thompson rose above the orders he had been given and was able to save many because of that.

The Internet Essays - Digital Technology, Media Technology
The Internet Essays - Digital Technology, Media Technology The Internet Science:Computers(:Internet) The Internet - By: Matt Garner The Internet, or net, is a vast network of computers that connects many of the world's businesses, institutions, and individuals. The Internet is composed of many parts, including the World Wide Web, FTP, IRC, Newsgroups, Gopher, WAIS, Archie, and of course Electronic Mail (Email). The Internet is mainly used for communication. Email is the most heavily used resource of the Internet- over 40 million email messages are sent through the Internet a day. The second most used resource, called the World Wide Web, or WWW, consists of pages of words, images, sounds, and video. The Internet is continuing to grow at 40% a year, with about 20 million users, mainly in USA, Canada, and Australia, but still many all over the world. You can do many things on the Internet, such as shop for just about anything, bank and manage money, watch and listen to live cable televison and radio broadcasts, talk to other users with voice like a telephone, conduct international meetings, and access all kinds of information on any subject imaginable. As mentioned earlier, the WWW consists of pages and pages of text, images, sounds, and video. Unlike pages in a book, there is no maximum size for a page, and there is HyperText Links. If you click on any one of these links, the computer will automatically go to the page specified by the link. The WWW is programmed in a computer language called Hyper Text Markup Language, or HTML. Searching the Web can be a difficult thing to do, or if you use a search engine, it can be really easy. Since so many new web pages are added to the Web a day, a very good index is hard to keep, and an alphabetical listing of millions of web pages would be almost impossible to navigate through. To help this problem, people developed search engines that search the Web for you. Some search engines, like Yahoo, search in a big web directory they have made of hundreds of thousands of web pages, that is organized like a phonebook. Other search engines, like Alta Vista, or Magellan, search in a list of Web pages it has created as it surfed the web all by it's self. People usually access the Internet through a computer using a device called a modem. Modems connect people to the net through telephone lines. Some companies, and the "heart" of the Internet, Use Fiber-Optic cables to connect. Fiber-Optic cabled are made of hair-thin strands of glass that carry information at the speed of light as pulses of light. Fiber-Optics are thousands of times faster than standard copper telephone lines. The Internet began in the 1960's. In 1962, the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the United States Department of Defense developed a network of computers called ARPAnet. At first, this network only connected military and government computer systems. The purpose was to make all information safe, so that in disaster or war, if one computer was destroyed, it's information would not be lost. In 1966, the ARPAnet was expanded to include universities and other institutions. One of the first universities to be added was Utah State University. Soon, large companies and corporations were added, too. By 1990, anyone with a computer, a modem, and Internet software could connect to the Internet. There are many things in the future of the net, including video conferencing, online virtual reality worlds, and faster Internet connections.

Future Trends in HR - Essay Example The digital age enables part-time, remote work along with new paradigms that reward creativity. Motivation cohesive teams capitalize upon new systems of applying human intellect. Certain advances in HRM have helped meet these challenges. Holistic management helps leaders see people within an organizational framework where these process networks are emerging (Chiavenato 2001). Some of the traditional roles of HRM have become domain of middle management, and strategic planning has become a task for HRM. Joint decisions and communication augment this emerging corporate culture.Helping employees develop their full potential as well as developing alternatives to traditional conflict management are just some of the new trends toward more effective HRM. As globalization continues to consolidate many of the previously disparate systems in business, HRM is changing to meet these new challenges. It is becoming more and more dynamic and is emerging as a synergistic force in this global economy. Nevertheless, as nuances in organizations appear, HRM must adapt to dynamically meet these demands. Of what use are management ideas and concepts in the practice of Coursework
Of what use are management ideas and concepts in the practice of management - Coursework Example Henri Fayol described his 14 principles of management that, when used in conjunction with other principles, build an effective team and develop a strong manager. Fayolââ¬â¢s 11th principle, equity, determines how to best motivate employees, creating fairness whilst blending authority and kindness. Equity is often determined by the justness of rewards, ensuring that all high-performing employees receive equal opportunities for additional remuneration or other appropriate rewards. Equity is important as a manager in the real-world business environment as it provides employees with a sense of affiliation. This is linked with Fayolââ¬â¢s 13th principle, initiative, that provides more autonomous working environments and opportunities to express employee innovations as become active in the decision-making process. Motivational theories indicate that employees must receive esteem and recognition from others in the organisation. Affiliation establishes perceptions of prestige, control and self-esteem (Gambrel and Cianci). Wal-Mart, a major multi-national retailer, recognises the importance of Fayolââ¬â¢s guidelines for management, providing employees with stock options, incentive bonuses and even profit sharing as a means to build commitment, ownership and equity. Wal-Mart is world-renowned for its high-commitment employees that are team-focused and therefore able to carry out strategic goals. These remuneration packages provide equity by establishing rewards for all employees throughout the organisation and inspires a sense of affiliation as valued contributors to the business model. Fayolââ¬â¢s theories, especially equity and initiative, are important concepts in the real-world. Managers establish strategic goals that determine the future position of the organisation related to profit, competitive advantage or other elements related to its market position. Multi-national companies, especially, require team-focused employees in order to achieve these goals. According to Reis and Pena (2008, p.674), ââ¬Å"If the business is still using vertical hierarchies instead of self-directed teams, truly empowered to make changes, it is not ready for changeâ⬠. This means that there will likely be resistance to change from different employees if the manager does not provide initiative in his or her efforts whilst promoting a sense of equity that there will be balanced rewards for achievement for all employees. Fayolââ¬â¢s concepts are h ighly relevant as the business will not be able to achieve without employee cooperation when teamwork is required to create new strategies and innovations. Mintzberg is another management guru who has established multiple theories of management that are classical in design. Mintzberg describes ten different management roles required to establish a successful management system, these being informational, interpersonal and decisional (LMC, 2008). Of most relevance is the interpersonal dynamic of the manager who takes on the role of a leader, or one who inspires others rather than establishing routine control systems to gain productivity and motivation. The difference between managers and leaders is in their approach to establishing interpersonal relationships. For example, a

Repeal Abortion Laws Now :: Argumentative Persuasive Topics
Repeal Abortion Laws Now Why do the abortion laws stay on the books? One reason is the apparent inability or unwillingness of those who advocate population limitation to see the connection. (This does not apply to Planned Parenthood-World Population, which in November, 1968, passed resolutions calling for repeal of the abortion laws in support of its declared policy of voluntary parenthood.) By 1968, almost all the major religious groups in the United States except the Roman Catholic Church were on record in favor of abortion-law reform or repeal. The American Baptist Convention and the Universalist/Unitarian Church came out for total repeal. And public opinion polls demonstrated that a majority of people, including a majority of the Catholics asked about the issue, favored at least some liberalization of the laws. But the opposition of the Catholic Church is potent and well organized. The Church holds that the fetus is "ensouled" at conception. In his encyclical Humanae Vitae in July of 1968, Pope Paul said, "We must once again declare that the direct interruption of the generative process already begun and above all, directly willed and procured abortion, even if for therapeutic reasons, are to be absolutely excluded as licit means of regulating birth." To this unequivocal statement--which is, of course, not the law in any American state, since all states permit abortion at least to save the life of the mother--the Pope adds an "Appeal to Public Authorities." He says, "To Rulers, who are those principally responsible for the common good, and who can do so much to safeguard moral customs, we say: Do not allow the morality of your people to be degraded; do not permit that by legal means practices contrary to the natural and divine law be introduced into that fundamental cell, the Family....May all responsible public authorities--as some are already doing so laudably--generously revive their efforts." I submit that insofar as this is an appeal to Catholic officials in this country, it must clearly be disregarded, because it is inconsistent with the laws of the land. By issuing such an "Appeal to Public Authorities," the Pope has placed in a very difficult position those Catholics who occupy public positions in this or in any country where separation of church and state is constitutionally or otherwise basically guaranteed. They must choose, for example, when it comes to abortion for the therapeutic reason even of saving the life of the woman between their obligations to their church and their obligations to their state.
